CALIFORNIA — A routine interstate inspection took a dramatic turn after federal agents uncovered nearly 1,000 pounds of liquid narcotics hidden in plain sight inside a semi-truck’s fuel tank.
The incident occurred along northbound Interstate 15 just north of the California Highway Patrol weigh scales. U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) agents assigned to the San Diego Sector pulled over a northbound bobtail tractor—a commercial semi traveling without a trailer.
During the stop, a trained Border Patrol detection canine named Loki alerted agents to suspicious activity around the rig’s side fuel tanks. Rather than normal diesel, the interior showed physical signs of narcotics concealment.
Authorities escorted both the driver and the tractor to the Newton-Azrak Border Patrol Station, where specialized hazardous-materials response personnel dismantled the tank. Teams siphoned out approximately 115 gallons of suspected fluid.
Subsequent field chemical tests confirmed the liquid was dissolved methamphetamine, clocking in at an aggregate weight of 962 pounds. Federal officials estimate the street value of the confiscated contraband at approximately $1 million.
“This massive seizure of liquid methamphetamine highlights the lengths these transnational criminal organizations will go to smuggle hard narcotics into our communities,” said Justin M. De La Torre, Chief Patrol Agent for the San Diego Sector. “The vigilance of our agents, the reliability of our K-9 units, and our strong multi-agency partnerships are vital to dismantling these illicit smuggling operations.”
The commercial vehicle was seized, and the driver—a Mexican national—was taken into custody and transferred to Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) alongside local authorities for federal prosecution.
