Dashcam Video Refutes Trucker’s Claims in Fatal Mesquite Interchange Crash
MESQUITE, Texas — A New York truck driver faces a second-degree felony manslaughter charge after dashcam footage contradicted his statement to investigators following a deadly early-morning wreck on an interstate ramp, authorities said.
The collision occurred around 3:15 a.m. on the transition ramp connecting westbound Interstate 30 to northbound Interstate 635 in Mesquite.
According to the Mesquite Police Department, 33-year-old Lisa Maldonado of Garland was driving a Chevrolet Equinox SUV when she struck the back of a commercial semi-trailer. The impact wedged the SUV beneath the trailer, dragging the smaller vehicle forward.
First responders transported Maldonado to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The driver of the 18-wheeler, 39-year-old Khasan Begbaev of Brooklyn, New York, was uninjured and remained at the scene.
Sworn Statement Disproved by Video
In an interview with traffic investigators, Begbaev claimed he was simply slowing down in the lane with hazard lights activated to make a turn toward Austin when a speeding vehicle rear-ended him. Begbaev also told responding officers that his forward-facing cab camera was broken and not recording.
An officer inspected the dashcam unit inside the cab and discovered the device was operational.
Upon reviewing the recording, investigators saw the commercial rig enter the left lane of the ramp, come to a dead stop, and back down the highway ramp in the dark.
Police determined Begbaev was not impaired by drugs or alcohol, and he voluntarily submitted to a blood draw. However, investigators concluded the decision to reverse a multi-ton commercial rig on an active interstate ramp constituted reckless behavior with conscious disregard for human life.
Authorities booked Begbaev into the Dallas County jail on one count of manslaughter, with bond set at $50,000.

Reversing on a controlled-access highway violates standard commercial driving regulations and Texas transportation statutes. Missing an interchange ramp requires commercial operators to proceed to the next exit rather than placing other drivers at catastrophic risk.
The incident highlights why rapid digital evidence recovery remains critical in commercial carrier accidents. Had investigators not physically examined the in-cab camera at the scene, crucial video evidence directly refuting the driver’s narrative could have been lost.
